Access to the net

This was a horrible video when I saw it for the first time in high school, but it was pretty revolutionary. I love watching the reactions of the kids today with this video. It is hilarious!! Enjoy!

The reason I mention this video is because we are watching today's "average" kid in the United States. Students, for the most part, have access to all types of digital media and are very fluent in social networking and general internet surfing. But not all kids are today's "average" kid. Some students have limited to access to the internet.

In my county of Gwinnett, we are ranked 2nd in the state for internet speed with 100% download and upload combinations. Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has it own Virtual School. Gwinnett County Public Libraries have e-books available for check out. We even have the youngest and one of the most modern and state-of-the-art colleges within our borders. Having access to the internet comes easy to most of the citizens of Gwinnett.

One of the major barriers of access is the financial availability of the families with little to no income. These students may not have a proper computer at home or limited data plans by their provider, possibly neither of these at all.

As more families with limited incomes move into Gwinnett, GCPS has to find better ways to provide for these students as we implement hybrid and fully online courses. Some schools are starting programs that allow students to BYOD (Bring our Own Device.) At the same time, families can also "check out" devices from the school library and take them home for use.

Another major barrier is the knowledge of students in using the internet and devices. By having more computer access and exposure within the schools will allow more and more students gain this knowledge. Elementary schools have started teaching students many of these needed skills and giving them access to educational sites that allow them to explore appropriate sites that can guide them to proper digital citizenship.
